  1. 3 Questions I Might Ask During an Interview:
How would you approach engaging with first-year students to understand their needs and convince them of the value of The Rolling Clouds handbook in their academic journey?
In a hypothetical scenario where a student expresses skepticism about the handbook’s usefulness, how would you handle the situation and articulate the benefits effectively?
Can you share an experience from your past where you successfully sold or promoted a product/service to a target audience, and how would you apply those skills to selling The Rolling Clouds handbook?
3 Big Moments Demonstrating My Value:
Last summer, I worked for a moving and storage company. After about a month of working there, I found myself as the man in charge of a crew of 4-5 movers to complete a job professionally and in a timely manner. I was responsible for calling the customer to let her know when we would be arriving, answering any questions the customer might’ve had, filling out the paperwork correctly, as well as the actual moving of boxes and furniture, assembling anything that was needed, and placing certain items to the customer’s desire. The job went extremely well as the crew received a 5-star rating review.
After a tough first semester of college, my grades were almost to the point where I would be placed on academic probation from the basketball team. In order to turn this problem around, my coach and I set up weekly meetings to review my attendance, upcoming due dates, and if I was keeping up with my assignments. After a couple weeks of the next semester, I got myself into a routine that allowed me to get all my school work completed, get shots up, work out, and even socialize. This demonstrates that I can collaborate with a higher up and develop good habits that benefit me individually as well as the team.
When I was in high school, every summer from my freshman year til sophomore year of college, I would be a basketball camp counselor for kids from elementary school through 8th grade. I was responsible for designing basketball games and drills to engage kids in fundamentals such as teamwork, discipline, and communication as well as ensuring their well-being and offering emotional support. I developed leadership, coaching, instructional and communication skills helping oversee children, as well as getting involved with the community.
3 Questions an Interview Committee Might Ask Me:
How do you plan to tailor your approach when promoting The Rolling Clouds handbook to students with diverse academic interests and backgrounds?
Can you provide an example of a challenging sales situation you’ve faced in the past, and how did you overcome it?
What strategies would you employ to stay informed about the evolving needs and concerns of first-year college students, ensuring their handbook remains relevant and valuable?
Potential Improvements for our Sample Job Description:
The use of “decision makers” could be refined to be more specific. Instead of targeting decision makers generally, specifying roles like university administrators, academic advisors, or relevant faculty members could ensure a more targeted and inclusive approach. Specifying the types of software or tools relevant to the role could make the requirement more concrete and allow candidates to better understand the expectations. A little thing that we could do to improve our job description could be specifying if the job will be a full-time or part-time position. This will allow the candidates to decide if this job will bring in enough income for their current and future needs.

  2. Questions for applicants

What is an example of a time you made use of a professional connection and how did it help you reach a goal?

How would you go about gathering information for this handbook?

What is an example of a time you had to correct a miscommunication? How did you respond in that situation? What would you have done differently?

    Moments to focus on

Was very helpful and informative in answering questions and providing support to a group staying on campus over the summer, to the point where the counselors knew me by name. This included help with keys, getting the rooms set and explaining the arrangements, checking people in, and addressing any concerns.

Coordinated and spoke at multiple events for Zephyr, both as an individual club and in collaboration with the Creative Writing Club. Spoke both to present content and to promote involvement with the organizations.

    Questions from committee

What interests you in this position?

What is an example of a time when you came back from failure?

What personal experiences do you have that you think could contribute to the handbook?

There are a couple of things I question about the job description. One is that the job title is for a salesman (salesperson) but the description seems to indicate that there would be duties in freshman orientation as well. Additionally, the key competencies are very vague and difficult to gauge in potential applicants.

  3. Three questions I would ask in our interview:
How would you be able to pitch The Rolling Clouds handbook to not only a university committee but to first year students?
What about this job interests you the most and why?
In situations that involve miscommunication, how did you handle this situation? What would you like to better the next time a situation like this arrives?
Three big moments to focus on:
I created and now am the President on a medical missions club on campus. I am responsible for creating new fundraising ideas, communicating with our team as well as those on campus, reaching out to business to help sponsor us or create fundraisers, and organized a trip for 20 students to go to a third world country.
On top of all of the outside of school responsibilities that I have, I continue to keep up deans list status on my academics. I am able to keep things on tasks and be able to work at the highest level with lots of things on my plate.
I also run a restaurant, and have been for the last six years. Being able to handle the stress at such a young age, and being able to keep the restaurant afloat is very important. So being able to work on that and work others in that specific high intensity and environment that it requires is something that I always bring to interviews like this.
    Three questions a committee asks:
How have you dealt with adversity in your life?
What is your reason for applying for this position?
Where do you see yourself in this organization in 5 years? What is your long term plan for this employment?
There are some things that I question about our sample job description. I think that we need to rework the way that we have things listed and how we are able to make sure that we are clear and concise with what we are asking of the applicant. I think being able to completely rework and reword each section of our job description is really important. And when we find that, then we will be able to have something that flows and that works well with our team and values. Having it be succinct and coherent is the next best step to make it seem like other job descriptions.

  4. What are some universities I would be traveling to in the future? And will I be responsible for all of the costs myself or would that be covered by the storm tours group?

The presentation I will be presenting will I be creating those myself or will I be sharing a presentation that has already been made up by the team?

What is something that would make me stand out from the other applicants that you look for?

The first story I would like to share is when I worked in sales we had a customer come in that did not speak english. This customer spoke a language that not many people I have met are able to speak. I was not working with the customer at the time but did overhear the conversation and the customer was speaking greek. With me being able to speak Greek enough to have decent conversation I helped my co-worker out and helped the customer get what they needed and the customer was very appreciative that I was able to speak Greek with them and be able to get what they needed.

A second story I would like to share is when I worked in construction. While working in construction you are faced with many difficult situations. This difficult situation involved 2 co-workers who were much older than me. The boss told them how to do a task in a way my older coworkers have never seen before. With me being younger and my boss being on the young side as well I knew how he wanted it done and I was able to help my older co-workers do it the way the boss wanted it done so it would be done the right way.

A third story I would like to share is when I worked at a childrens after school program. During my time at this job I would have to alter the way I spoke to younger children. I would often find myself speaking to large groups of children to explain concepts to them of how a game was played or how to treat others with respect. Working this job taught me great public speaking because I was able to get younger children to listen to me when that is not an easy thing to do since they don’t have as good of an attention span as people who are older.

Are you able to work with computers well and are you able to create presentations that would appear exciting to new first year students?

What are your strengths and weaknesses when it comes to sales? Are you able to get your point across in a professional manner that can tend to the target age you are looking to sell something to?

What would you say would make you a better candidate for this position than anyone else that is applying for this position?

Some things I question about the job description that were not listed are would I be talking about the handbook to the professional staff of sasc and first year experience or would they be up to date with it already and they would just be helping me to add to it? Other things I was curious about is how you said I would be traveling to other universities would the person in that position have to pay for it themselves to travel or would travel expenses be covered by the team.

  5. Journal 21:
    Three questions:
How would you pitch this handbook to executives?

What is your best sales tactic?

What are three strengths and three weaknesses you have?

    Three big moments:
I was elected the captain of the club baseball team here at UNE. This was a big moment for me because it elevated my involvement with the organization. My responsibilities went from just being a player to now having to communicate with the club sports government, schedule fundraising events, design new hats and uniforms, run practices and lineups for games.

I also work a restaurant job while being a student here. I work as an expeditor which is really just the person who controls what food goes out when. Another duty of my job is communicating on behalf of both of the back of house staff and front of house staff. This has led to many moments when I had to take control of situations and mediate a conflict. This job has also helped me control my time more as adding work hours to my week helps me stop procrastinating as I know I have limited time.

My last moment was when I got on the Dean’s list. After a less than perfect freshmen year, I was able to bounce back and get a 3.9 GPA both of my sophomore semesters. This was huge to me as it represented all of the changes I made academically. This is an ongoing thing as well as I still use the tactics to keep my grades up and will until I graduate here.

    Questions from the committee:
What are some difficulties you have gone through in your professional life?

Why do you want to be a part of this company?

What are some of your long term professional goals?

I think that overall our job description draft has a very strong base. I think there really is not a perfect job description as it really comes down to preference of the writer/company. I will definitely cut down and optimize the sentences of the bigger paragraphs as when we listened to the peer review, I realized I definitely suffered from some word vomit. I will edit and add onto our key competencies however since I got a lot of good inspiration from other groups during our peer review.
